BTS - Lights | Analysis
as part of a mini-album containing the Japanese version of “Boy With Luv” and “Idol.” We expect nothing short of perfection when it comes to BTS, the thought process and production value they put into their art. As always, we were not disappointed.
Today we are giving a run-down of some of the several interpretations that lie within this stunning song and music video — enjoy!
Jungkook starts off by expressing the nature of having those days where you simply need to disconnect and live as if nobody’s watching. This particularly ties in with him being alone at the movie theatre (perhaps the one we can see in “Boy With Luv” music video from the outside?).
Being there could symbolize the lack of free time he would have had when he was younger as he was pursuing his dreams, and only now is he able to catch up on this “lost” time.
Notice how we then see Taehyung struggling with the blue door - potentially a metaphor for a certain path that he wants to take? When Jimin came in the scene, they were able to essentially make a whole new road and outcome for themselves, together, with the use of their music.
Then, the freeze-frame-like moments coming from Taehyung and Jimin’s encounter with Jungkook, and the rap line’s encounter with Seokjin, could be the beginning of a new timeline - a change in their destiny the second they meet another member of the group.
Hoseok’s first two lines of his verse particularly hold significance, since he is known for his iconic “I’m your hope, I’m your angel, I'm J-Hope!” motto. Coincidence? Perhaps he is talking about how he knows the pain all too well but continues walking forward, stronger than before. Could be, but who knows?
Towards the end of the verse, he is talking about being unable to find either a happy or sad outcome to his worries since he was still trying to find some substance to himself . Nonetheless, he embraces all of himself because he was able to take part in the painting of his own self.
Seokjin also sings about how his light is able to brighten the way, all the while waking up Jungkook from his slumber where he seemingly meets all of the members under different circumstances, in different timelines (they do not seem to know each other in the first part of the MV). Seokjin is able to lead him back to the reality that he is in, where they are all together.
Yoongi’s verse then starts off by expressing feelings of fulfillment — admitting that he does not have to experience sleepless nights filled with worry or feel burdened and that it made him grow into a stronger person, all thanks to the reliance on one another. An idea which got passed around a lot was that of Yoongi asking “what is love?” and then panning to a shot of him smiling at the other six members, perhaps he was able to find the answer right in front of his eyes.
Namjoon also speaks of how, simply put, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Though we do not know what may come, we are still able to overcome whatever life may put our way if we just create our own definition of joy, our own coping mechanisms, and so on, to help us grow and learn more about ourselves.
The next few scenes almost have an inception vibe, especially due to the fact that they show BTS in this “alternative universe” where they did not seem to have known each other, and yet we continue to see them collectively in multiple shots, then entering the screening room in the movie cinema as a way to show the fact that destiny cannot be changed, and they were all meant to together no matter the circumstances.
Lastly, the repetition of “how far apart we are, your light shines on me” could be a reminder of the fact that no matter if the movie finishes and this version of BTS is forgotten, we will still live within and for each other. We will continue to be there for one another no matter the situation — a good reminder for each member, but also for ARMY.
It just comes to show the importance of BTS as a whole, reminding themselves of why they are able to be the group and ultimately the family they are today.
