Pip pip! Buckle up everyone, as the Year-End Korean Award Season is right around the corner! Have you voted for the boys already? Or have you lost track of how many awards shows you should pay attention to? Worry not, we, ARMY Magazine, are here to give you an ultimate guide to winter award shows in Korea, which will—most likely—be attended by BTS, along with how to cast your votes.
2019 V Live Awards V Heartbeat
Date: November 16, 2019
Time: 7PM KST
Venue: Gocheok Sky Dome, Seoul
V Heartbeat is the first ever award show held by Naver's V Live. V Heartbeat's line up not only consisted of Korean popular groups like GOT7, Mamamoo, Tomorrow by Together, ITZY, and Stray Kids, but also foreign artists such as Anne Marie (UK), Afgan (Indonesia), Noo Phước Thịnh (Vietnam) and indie artists Jannabi and Nell.
The winners of the categories are picked by V Live, but fans can support their favorite groups in getting Global Artist Top 12 and Global Rookie Top 5 categories by giving hearts, liking and commenting on the artist's platform and live streams. Fans can also cast one vote per day (3 times for V Heartbeat Fanship subscribers!) for The Most Loved Artist category. Although BTS didn't manage to present or perform at the award ceremony, they successfully brought 2 awards home: Global Artist Top 12 and The Most Loved Artist. Congratulations!
Melon Music Awards
Date: November 30, 2019
Time: 6PM KST
Venue: Gocheok Sky Dome, Seoul
Melon Music Awards is a major award show in Korea and is organized by Kakao M. BTS joined the line up together with their label dongsaeng, Tomorrow X Together, N.Flying, Chungha, Heize, Mamamoo, Jannabi, AB6IX and many others. The award category has its own calculation to choose the winner, by combining digital sales, online voting by fans, and judge’s scores. Unfortunately, only Korean citizens are allowed to vote, but don’t worry! International fans can still support BTS by streaming the show on the Youtube Channel 1thek.
After last year’s epic performance from BTS (how can we forget the 3J dance break and that huge Barongsai during “IDOL”?), many people expected something just as crazy from this year’s stage. BTS sure knows how to satisfy the audience, with solo dance stages for each member and the energetic performance of “Dionysus”, leaving the audience in awe. They wrapped up the night by snatching all the Daesangs: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Album of the Year and Artist of the Year, becoming the first K-Pop group in history to do so, and not to mention, snagging 4 other awards as well: Top Artist of the Year, Netizen’s Favorite Artist, Kakao Hot Star and Best Male Dance.
Mnet Asian Music Awards
Date: December 4, 2019
Time: 6PM KST
Venue: Nagoya Dome, Japan
Mnet Asian Music Awards, or MAMA, stands next to the MMA’s as being one of the biggest South Korean music awards ceremonies. MAMA is presented by CJ E&M and first aired in 1999. Originally, MAMA was called Mnet Music Video Festival, but was renamed the Mnet Asian Music Awards to spread Hallyu influence across Asia, and the show has been held outside of South Korea since then (except in 2018, MAMA was held in 3 countries: South Korea, Hongkong and Japan). This year’s MAMA was held in Japan with a refreshing list of performing artists: BTS, GOT7, Seventeen, Tomorrow by Together, ITZY, ATEEZ, Twice, Chung Ha, Mamamoo, J.Y. Park and many more.
Good news for us ARMY—who are widely known to take fan voting very seriously—each year we can vote for the boys both on official MAMA website and on Twitter for “Worldwide Fans’ Choice TOP 10” category. For voting on the website, log in with social media such as KakaoTalk, Line, Twitter, Facebook, Weibo, WeChat, Naver, Instagram and Google account with a maximum one vote per day.
With hard work, ARMY helped BTS achieve a new milestone when they became the first K-Pop group in history to sweep all the Daesangs for both the MMAs and the MAMAs. Way to go ARMY! The boys won Album of the Year (which featured Jimmy Fallon as the presenter!), Worldwide Icon of the Year, Song of the Year and Artist of the Year, along with Best Music Video, Best Male Group, Worldwide Fans’ Choice TOP 10, Qoo10 Favorite Male Artist and Best Male Dance Performance.
